I'm tri-ing to cure cancer

Here in Austin, most everyone is familiar with the Lance Armstrong Foundation.  Look around a crowd of people and you're likely to see a few wrists adorned with yellow LiveStrong bands.  What exactly does this foundation do?  In their own words, "At the Lance Armstrong Foundation, we unite people to fight cancer believing that unity is strength, knowledge is power and attitude is everything."

Who among us doesn't know someone close to them who has battled cancer?  Cancer has touched us all and will continue to do so.  1.4 million Americans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer this year.  560,000 Americans are expected to die from cancer this year, or more than 1,500 per day.  Nearly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime.  My grandmother, Anne Lilly, was a victim of breast cancer.

Why am I telling you all this?  On September 7, 2009 I will be competing in the Austin Triathlon in support of the Livestrong Lance Armstrong Foundation.  This is an Olympic distance triathlon which means I'll be swimming 1 mile, bicycling 40K, and running 10K.  My goal is to raise $1000 for the fight against cancer and in support of cancer survivors.

In support of that goal, I have yellow LiveStrong bands!  I will bring them to our workouts.  For $1 donation, you too can have a yellow LiveStrong band!  More than $1 is welcome too.  And if you have it in your budget to donate more, I have a fundraising page.  Click here to make an online donation or to print out a form to mail in with a check.

Asking for donations is never easy, but this is such a worthy cause that I am asking anyway.  Please consider making a donation, no matter how small.  Any amount will help.

Thank you.
Pam

A worthy cause

Cancer affects us all in one way or another. Weather we are touched by a survivor's story or have personally felt the darkness that it can bring. A little over 2 months ago, I got a call from my mom saying that my dad was diagnosed with cancer. It was the worst day of my life. Never in a million years did I ever think I would hear those words. After a successful surgery, he became a survivor and is now cancer free.

Cancer research is so important. Thanks Pam for doing your part to help the Lance Armstrong Foundation and to raise money for such a worthy cause. You can count on my donation. And I will be there on Sept. 7th with cow bell in hand cheering for you at the finish line  ;)

Happy ending

Kristen,

I can only imagine how you must have felt when you heard those words about your dad.  I'm very happy to hear that he is now cancer free! Thank you so much for your support!

Definitely a worthy cause. I

Definitely a worthy cause.

I lost a very good friend in Dec 2008 to complications from a bone marrow transplant that cured his 2nd bout with cancer. He was 28 and survived almost 2 years fighting the effects of Graft V. Host disease that ended up making more scar tissue in his lungs than his body could handle. Perhaps more research can find an answer to the issues that eventually killed him.

Also in Aug 2008, his mother in law (my best friend's mother) succombed to brain, kidney, and bone cancer. These losses left my friend alone with a 5-year old daughter. Her husband and mother were both gone in the span of 6 months. I'd give any amount of money to help anyone else avoid this pain and loss.

Thanks for joining the fight Pam!

Count on Me

Old ladies are supposed to be rich, and even though I'm not, I'll definitely support you in this great endeavor.

Thanks Jody!

You are rich in so many ways.  I appreciate any support I can get.

Glad to help

I'll see you at the practice.  I'll be glad to help out.  The number of people in my life affected by cancer or having died by it would make this too long.

Happy to contribute

I just made my online contribution -- in memory of my mother, who I lost to brain cancer in 2002, and my brother, Ricardo, who I lost to AIDS-related lymphoma in 1992.

Way to raise good cash for such a wonderfully worthy cause!

I'm sorry that you have so many family members to honor in this way.  I appreciate your donation very much and hope my actions can help in some small way.
