Sausage Slapping at the Wurst Triathlon, New Braunfels
When: Aug 24 2009 - 2:11pm
Distance: Sprint
Location: Austin, Texas
This past Sunday I completed the Wurst Tri in New Braunfels, Texas and the best thing about the tri was that it is over. It was held at Landa Park and put on by Redemption Race Productions. The night before I stayed in Seguin and didn’t get much rest. The race started at 7:30AM and really didn’t start until around 8AM. The temperature that day was 108. Yikes! The swim start was rather ridiculous having everyone go every 5 seconds and in no particular order. I had a special technique and path after watching around 250 people go in front of me. My swim time was 4:58 and the fastest in my age group. My transition time rocked and I really had a burst of energy until I got on my bike and hit the “California Hillâ€. It was horrible and just nasty. There were grown men walking their bike up it and bodies on side of the road there after. The ride was very hilly and long. The best part (sarcastically said) is that the whole time there were cars weaving in and out of the lanes on the country roads to avoid bikers. I had to ride in behind a truck, which totally killed my time because I couldn’t pass him with other cars coming the other way. To top it off while running into the transition area from the bike people’s kids were walking in front of the transition entrance. I almost hit one with my bike. The run was good for the first mile until I got to the water station. Just my luck they were running out of water and only had ice for me. The second mile, ice as well. I quickly poured it down my pants just to cool off. The heat was unbearable and running on asphalt up hills was not the best birthday moment. Yes, I did a tri on my birthday. My last mile I kicked it into gear only to find that once crossing the bridge for the last quarter mile into the park there were people blocking the entrance of the bridge we had to run over. I also heard shouts of “do it for the sausage,†which they had at the end of the race. Overall, my times were good on the run and swim and feel myself getting better on the bike. The Wurst Tri did however uphold its name, it was short staffed and very unorganized and I felt that after the first 50 finishers they forgot about the rest of the 250 people on the run and in the 108 degree weather. I felt like slapping the event coordinator with my kilobossa sausage.

oh my!!
I have ridden up that California Hill - at the end of the 63 mile Wurst Ride in 2004 (the finish line wasn't very well coordinated on that one either). I wasn't supposed to ride up that hill, but my buddy had finished a minute or two ahead of me and was already drinking beer, therefore didn't holler at me when I passed the finish line at the little footbridge. Oh, did I mention I was still riding my hybrid then? I can't imagine the absolute start of a bike portion of a triathlon sending you up that hill.. You must have Iron Legs.
Hope the birthday was happy otherwise!Â

Yes Wurst Tri was the WORST Tri
To start the shirts were the UGLIEST thing ever... Prob wouldnt even wear it to paint the house. The swim was horrible, we should of just gone off the slide, that way we would of had a fun story to go along with the start of the triathlon, because starting the race at 8:30 wasnt ideal. & when you tell your kids not to run around the pool, there is a reason for that... well we had to run .3 to transition while trying not to bust our ass, I chose to walk and my T1 was an impressive 7 min, haha. California hill was awful for the start of the race, and the director just thought it was hilarious... not so much Mr. Director. The hills were made worse when you were not able to take advantage of the down hills because you were stuck behind traffic, which made it that much harder to get up those awful hills. The run was just as bad... like Amy said, no water... um it was 108, NO WATER? are you kidding me. Luckily my bf had finished the race and met up with me to run the remainder of the race and he had some water. Also, when I ran across the tracks I hear a train approaching, had I taken 30 more seconds at the last water stop I would had gotten stuck on the other side... It was just a poorly run Triathlon and I will never do one put on by this company ever again.!!! Oh and they didnt even say my name when I went across the finish line... I mean I wasnt last or even close. to being last.. just not a good race.

I take it you did not like this race!

Happy Birthday Amy!
Sorry you and Haleigh had such a bad time. Sounds like a total cluster! Thanks for posting so the rest of us know not to sign up for this next year. I hope you got to enjoy the rest of your birthday.

Sorry y'all had such a bad time . . .
It sucks to get all stoked for a race, then have it got to poo due to disorganization. It sounds like a horrible experience.Certainly the Worst Tri Ever!
Hold the frickin' phone! I see THIS on the website (http://www.redemptionrp.com/WurstTriEver2009):
There is a 25mph restriction on the downhill coming back on California into the park, this section is also a no-pass zone.
WTF?
